About Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo

Location

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is located in the northwestern region of the State of Guerrero. (Acapulco and colonial Taxco are also in Guerrero.)

This coastline runs diagonally, not north-south. Acapulco is 225 kilometers/ 140 miles "down the coast" (to the southeast); Puerto Vallarta 663 kilometers/412 miles up the coast (northwest), and they are all connected by the coastal Federal Highway 200. This expanse of tropical Pacific coastline is referred to as the "Mexican Riviera".

The segment of coastline between Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Acapulco is known as "La Costa Grande".

Set against the green backdrop of the sheltering Sierra Madre del Sur mountains, the greater Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo area runs along some17 miles of scenic coastline with sandy beaches, quiet lagoons, scalloped coves, rocky bluffs and offshore islets.
