About Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo
Weather
Good weather is reliably consistent in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. Annual temperature averages 24°-28° Celsius (75°- 82° Fahrenheit), with mostly sunny days year around. The "rainy season", mid-May through September, is generally pleasant, with "politely brief" late-afternoon or evening showers. However, the sun shines most of the day, and the hills turn bright green with vividly blooming wildflowers. April and May are warmest; in December and January you can enjoy a mild temperature.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is protected by the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range against infrequent Pacific tropical storms and hurricanes. Additionally, Zihuatanejo Bay is a natural shelter. (You can observe these factors from the air.) For example, when hurricane Pauline (1997) and Hurricane John (2006), damaged other areas of the Mexican Riviera, their only effect in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo was that it simply rained -- just the minor effect of la colita (little tail), as they say. The worst storm damage is caused by incorrect news reports by the geographically careless news media who confuse Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo with other Pacific coast areas.
